Historicizing Immersion
Is the experience of immersion contingent on the novelty offered up briefly by a given medium or technology at its introduction? Or is it a product of the particular environment afforded by the experience one has of a medium as a social and spatial configuration at a given moment in history, one that changes with those configurations over time? This talk will lay out the range of questions pertinent to an examination of immersion that seeks to consider the historicity of the phenomenon and will couple them with an overview of the disciplines addressing these questions today. Are there immersive media or only immersive experiences?
