Money Makes the World Go Round: A look at unique free-to-play cultural characteristics
This paper uses an ethnographic approach to observe specific phenomena unique to free-to-play games and their communities. In addition to raising some ethical concerns regarding game production and maintenance, certain pay-to-win games mimic real world social structures. Similar to the game in this case-study, several free-to-play games provide an environment where individuals can buy their way to their top, reflecting not only the player’s real socioeconomic realities but also a change in the classic hierarchal structure of online multiplayer games.
