• Handmade Pixels – Independent Video Games and the Return of Craft

We used to know what video games were. We used to know that video games were sold in boxes, promoted on their production values, and subject to ever-growing budgets. In this talk, I will tell the story of how video games became something different: of how the idea of independent games appeared, how independent game festivals selected what was and wasn’t an independent game, and how independent game design appeared from 1998-2018. I will argue that independent games are fundamentally anti-modernist; critiques of modern video game development, and attempts at returning to an (imaginary) past of video game history.
